Jazz chants

-    What are Jazz chants?

Jazz Chants are snappy, rhythmical poems and rhymes that can be said with a swinging rhythm, something similar to rap.

-    Who is considered the creator?

Carolyn Graham

-    Who is she?
She is the author of a lot of English Language Teaching books and also the head of develop the technique of  jazz chanting through her own experience.

-    How can we create a useful and real jazz chant?

To create a Jazz Chant you have to follow some steps:

1.       Pick a topic, as food, clothes, sports, parts of the body…
2.       Write down ten words, related with the topic you choose before.
3.       Separate words by syllables according to the sounds.
4.       Now…You are ready!

Example:
Le-mon  (2 syllables)
Ba-na-na  (3 syllables)
Apple  (1 syllable)

-    These are some of the examples of Jazz chants:

In my opinion, Jazz Chants are a very successfully way to teach  children something. Why? Because through it, the children can learn easily the contents in a funny and entertaining way. Jazz Chant can be so useful like a working tool for the teachers because if the students are motivated, the work of the teachers is easier. And also, the teachers have fun with their students.

What do you think about Jazz chants? Do you agree with me?

SNOWHITE

First of all, we thought to represent the story of three little pigs. Why? Because can be a good story to play and have fun with the children because of the customs of the pigs and the different houses.
Then, we had to change it because another group chooses the same topic, so we decided to choose SNOWHITE. And why? Because we thought is a typical activity that all the students know it.

HOW TO PREPARE IT?

1.  To think about the different activities that we can do with the children in order to have a good scaffolding.
2.  To choose who represent the different characters.
3.  To buy the materials.
4.  To prepare the customs and all the activities.
5.  To meet all together to practice it.
6.  And…We are prepared to represent it!

WHAT ABOUT THE ACTIVITIES?

Pre-knowledge activity

In the first activity we introduce our characters. How? Through questions like:
·         Who am I?
·         Am good or bad?
·         Do you know how I do?

Storytelling and puzzle

After the warmer activity, we read a short story of Snowhite in which the students have to imitate the gestures and movements that we do. This activity is a way to understand better the vocabulary of the story because some words can be difficult for them.

Another activity was the puzzle. Here, we needed some volunteers so we asked: Any volunteer? And in the most of the cases they replayed yes. If ever there was not volunteers we chose the children so that all were involved. This activity consist on organize the different pieces of the puzzle in the correct order. If the children put in the correct order it means that they understand the story, if they don’t we try to explain with simple words.

Quiz time

We organize the class into two groups (group A and group B). Then, we asked questions about the story as:

·         What is the fruit that Snowhite eat?
a.   Orange
b.   Apple
c.   Pineapple
·         Where do Snowhite live?
a.   In a castle.
b.   In a school.
c.   In a hospital.
·         Who are the friends of Snowhite?
a.   The prince
b.   The witch
c.   The 7 dwarfs
·         The color of the prince’s horse is…:
a.   White.
b.   Blue.
c.   Black.

After the quiz, the group who had more correct answers got a little present that is an apple. But all the children have participated deserve a prize so we gave them a bookmark with the different dwarfs on it.

What do you think about the activities? Do you like it? Can we improve anything?

And here you have something related with our story…
The modern Snowhite!!

FAIRY TALE

To start the post is important to know…..

  •    What is a fairy tale?

A fairy tale is a short story that can contain characters as gnomes, giants, goblins, elves, fairies, elves, dwarves, mermaids and also enchantments.

At the beginning of the class, when the teacher said “fairy tale” I don’t have idea of what is, but when she started to comment I can understand.
Said this, I want to talk about the activity that we have done in class. The first of all is that the teacher asked everyone what fairy tale they want to be and why they choose it. Is this relevant? Of course yes, because through this question the teacher can know something more about the student. Before this activity, the teacher told us that we have to create our own fairy tale with a web page. And about this activity I want to comment some things:

I have no doubt, that the activity has a lot of scaffolding.
Through it, the students can learn more about the TIC’s because they use the computers. It is so important also because the teacher can know how the student is. Why? Because, imagine that a child write something related with a bad man who kill people and things like that…This child can have some problems because it is not normal that a child think this type of things (but not always happened), I mean, that we can “analyze” the character, personality, feelings or the way to think of the students.

Another important point (and is possible it is the most important for the children) is that the students have a very good time creating this activity, because it is so funny and enjoyable.

To finish, I’m going to talk about my fairy tale. It is about a normal girl (not so beautiful but not so ugly) who falls in love with a boy that has a disorder. Why I choose it? Because nowadays the person who has some type of disorder or disability is not integrated at all in the society and I feel so bad because of this.

What fairy tale do you create? Why do you choose it? What do you think about the activity?

Thanks for read it.
